QSFP - Quad Small-Form Factor Pluggable Transceiver

To achieve higher speeds, requested by servers, storage, and backbones the Quad Small Form-factor pluggable (QSFP+) was developed. The form factor of this product is slightly larger than the SFP and the architecture is a little different. Where the traditional SFP works with a single lane providing a maximum speed of 25 Gbps (for the SFP28), the QSFP+ offers 4 lanes. The additional lanes allow for 4 times the speed compared to single lane SFPs. The max speed of the first model (QSFP+) was 40Gbps (4 lanes of 10Gbps), however newly developed variants allow higher speeds. The QSFP28 allows speeds up to 100Gbps, the QSFP56 up to 200Gbps and the newest QSFP-DD even offers 400Gbps. To meet the quality and performance requirements of high-speed networks the transceivers are equipped with the Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) feature.
